Some 50 million light years away, in the constellation Pegasus, lies NGC 7331, an exemplary Sb spiral galaxy. One can see the prominent central bulge, the clearly defined spiral arms and the scattered bright regions of star formation. The dark zones are dust lanes. If one looks at them closely, it becomes apparent which side of the galaxy is closer. The far side fades away in a soft glow, while on the closer side a thick band of dust obscures the starlight behind it.
